Age verification with BankID — not a button where you tap "I'm 18"

Selling age-restricted goods unstaffed means age has to be genuinely checked. At JOBBS the customer signs in with BankID at the door — the system reads the actual age from the personal number and blocks anyone too young. Automatically, every time, with no staff on site.

The problem

Why "tap that you're 18" doesn't hold up

A regular vending machine can ask for age, but it can't check the answer. A button where the customer certifies they're 18 verifies nothing — anyone can press it. For tobacco, snus, vapes, energy drinks and beer that isn't enough, legally or in reality.

JOBBS solves it at the root. In an unstaffed store the visit begins with a BankID sign-in at the door. That gives a real personal number, and from it the system derives the customer's actual age. If the person is younger than the store's limit the door never opens — and an age-restricted product can't be completed at checkout. Age control isn't a courtesy question, it's a barrier.

How JOBBS does it

Two barriers, one identity

Verified age at the door In unstaffed mode the customer signs in with BankID. The age is derived from the personal number — not guessed, not self-reported. Anyone younger than the store's limit is never let in.
Age limit on a schedule Set an age limit per store and let it follow a schedule — for example active only during the unstaffed hours, when no staff can check ID.
Age limit per product Every item can carry its own age limit. If an under-age customer tries to add a restricted product to the basket, the purchase is stopped at checkout — not afterwards.
Traceable per purchase Every visit and purchase is tied to an identified person via BankID. If anything is ever questioned there is real evidence, not an anonymous transaction.

Responsibility

The tool is ours — the responsibility is yours

The platform gives you real age control, both at the door and per product. But selling age-restricted goods is regulated: tobacco and nicotine products require permits and notification, beer has its own rules, and the municipality supervises. You as the merchant are responsible for following Swedish tobacco and alcohol law and the conditions your municipality and the Public Health Agency set.

Our job is to give you the technical backbone — verified identity, controlled age and per-purchase traceability — so you can show the supervising authority that control actually happens. Check the setup with your municipality before you start selling.

FAQ

Age verification in an unstaffed store — frequently asked questions

How do you verify age — for real?

In an unstaffed store the customer signs in with BankID at the door. From the personal number the system derives the person's actual age and compares it to the store's age limit. If they are too young, entry is denied automatically. That is the difference from a machine where you tap that you're 18 — there, nothing is verified.

Can I sell beer, snus or vapes unstaffed?

The platform gives you real age control, both at the door and per product. But you as the merchant are responsible for following Swedish tobacco and alcohol law and the rules your municipality and the Public Health Agency set — including permits and notifications. Check the setup with your municipality before you start.

What happens if an under-age person tries to shop?

Two barriers apply. At the door, entry is denied if the person is younger than the store's age limit. And at checkout, an age-restricted product is blocked if the customer doesn't meet the product's age limit — the purchase simply doesn't go through.

Can the limit apply only at certain times?

Yes. The age limit can follow a schedule, so it is for example only active during the unstaffed hours while staff are away, and lets people in during staffed time when someone can check ID manually.

Can different products have different age limits?

Yes. The age limit is set per item, so for instance energy drinks, beer and tobacco can each have their own limit in the same store. You control it at product level and can update several items at once.

What does age verification cost?

Age control is part of the access system and JOBBS Handel — it builds on the same BankID sign-in that governs the door. Get in touch for a quote based on your business.
